Mystery Shopping and Underage Gambling Online

The Gambling Commission has announced plans to continue its mystery shopping program over the summer, following the results from May, which saw stores perform poorly at underage gambling prevention.

Although the report saw the gambling industry perform poorly at preventing underage access to highstreet gaming, online operators we found to be highly successful in verifying proof of age, and therefore detecting and stopping underage online gaming.

A recent report published by the National Lottery Commission also gives evidence that the online gaming industry outperforms its high street counterparts. Their independent study, is the only British study of its type, and is an independent survey of 9,000 12 to 15 year olds.

The results showed that 12-15 year olds illegally buying lottery products has dropped to 2% - the lowest number recorded in the last decade. In addition whilst 27% of the survey respondents had used the internet to purchase goods and services, only 0.3% of respondents claimed to have spent money on lottery games online.

Dr Anne Wright CBE, Chair of the National Lottery Commission commented:
“This continuing decline in underage play shows that an effective regulatory framework together with a socially responsible operator makes it very difficult for children to access National Lottery products.”
