Online retail market reaches 4.8 billion pounds in July
Despite a drop in high street sales, figures released for July show that online sales have increased by 11.3%.
The July increase in online spending now puts the market total for online shopping at £4.8 billion, which equates to an impressive £79 for every person in the UK.
These figures were released as part of the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales index, to which 60 online retailers, many of whom are 192.com Business Services customers, contribute to.
The drop in high street sales may be explained by the wet weather of July, and affected in particular barbeque related goods, including alcohol. However online sales of beers, wines and spirits were up 1.9%.
The Olympics may also explain the growth of sales in the electrical sector, as people rush to buy new flat screen TVs, and the iphone release which was so popular it crashed theO2 website, may have also been a large contributory factor to the growth.
Clothing, footwear and accessories however proved to be the largest growth area up 22.8%.
Mike Petevinos, Head of Consulting for Retail at Capgemini UK, commented:
“The increase in clothing/footwear sales demonstrates consumers’ ever increasing familiarity with e-retailing, extending their shopping behaviour into more and more categories. Even the electrical sector, which is highly susceptible to falling consumer confidence, is seeing good growth driven by the increased choice, price transparency and convenience that online has to offer.”
