Travel Fraud Initiative Launched
The Metropolitan Police Economic & Specialist Crime Unit’s Operation Sterling has today launched PROFiT (Prevent Fraud in Travel); a forum to help stamp out fraud in the UK travel industry.
It is estimated that travel fraud costs up to £300 million a year, with a UK loss estimated at £10million. In addition the Office of Fair Trading believes that 400,000 holidaymakers from the UK are affected by travel fraud or scams each year.
PROFiT will bring together key organizations within the travel sector to share best practice, information and processes that can beat fraud. Organisations such as British Airways, the Civil Aviation Authority, Hays Travel and the Institute of Hotel Security Management have already joined the forum, along with representatives at ABTA, APACS and the Metropolitan police.
As part of the launch, 192business.com’s Marketing Director, David Pope presented at the forum, to help highlight fraud prevention measures that can be employed to beat Travel Fraud. 192business.com have also published Travel-ID; a guide to beating fraud in the travel sector.
In addition to the launch of PROFiT, MP Nigel Evans has tables an early day motion in support of the initiative. Travel companies who wish to support this initiative can ask their local MP to back EDM790.
