Wishing you a Happy and Safe 5th November
With the peak retail season just around the corner, 192 have released a new compliance guide to help you stay up to date with the laws governing the sale of age restricted goods.
Whilst responsible retailers will be aware of the need to verify age when selling alcohol, there are other goods that require similar age checks to ensure a sale is legal…
Fireworks are one example of goods being increasingly sold online, with peak sales in the Autumn period. The BBC will screen an investigation on 5th November which shows two 15 year old children buying fireworks from two large high street supermarkets.
A similar investigation last year resulted in 30% of those retailers tested allowing the underage sale of fireworks.
The law prohibits sales to anyone under 18, and this is a legal requirement for both high street and on-line retailers.
If 30% of retailers tested will sell to underage customers when they are face to face, the potential for underage sales via the internet must also be questioned. For retailers selling fireworks online however, age verification is simple to integrate and an effective tool for preventing fraud and ensuring legal age compliance.
192 have produced a new compliance guide to age restricted sales online, and we are always happy to demonstrate how fast and efficient identity verification is when checking for proof of age online.
