Trinity Mirror PLC is the UK’s largest newspaper publishing company that publishes both national and regional newspapers as well as websites.

Trinity Mirror was formed out of the merger of two newspaper companies in September 1999 – Trinity and the Mirror Group. The group employs over 11,000 staff and publishes over 250 titles, including the Daily and Sunday Mirror and The People, with its newspapers reaching nearly half the population of the UK.

The Challenge

  1. The nature of Trinity Mirror meant that information is critical to the organisation and being able to get hold of leads and sources is essential for the editorial team.
  2. They also needed to verify individuals’ identities to check stories and sources, while the advertising team needed a system to research and follow up possible leads for campaigns.
  3. Not using a centralised people finding service led to individuals calling a wide range of 118 numbers, with the premium rates charged causing rising telephone costs. Using a mix of different numbers made it difficult for the finance team to track and keep on top of telephone costs.
  4. Trinity Mirror needed a low-cost and efficient directory enquiries service. By centralising on one provider it could cut costs, speed up the process and make it easier for the financial team to account for outgoings.

The Solution

Trinity Mirror decided to centralise its directory enquiries service and bring it online by integrating 192 Prove-ID directly onto their intranet. By using this service, Trinity Mirror was able to cut down on outgoing phone traffic.

The main benefit to the business was the significant financial savings that using 192.com Prove-ID solution offered.

Using the Internet helped to speed up enquiries, while centralising the service allowed the finance team to measure telephone costs and keep control of them.

"Directory enquiry services are central to our working day. Centralising our system has made things easier, quicker and a lot cheaper"
Peter Raettig, Operations Manager, MGN

192.com Prove-ID was rolled out across the company quickly and easily, with the system being split equally between the national and regional divisions.

192 Prove-ID allowed Trinity Mirror staff to find names and contact phone numbers instantly as well as cross check names, addresses, dates of birth and other personal information. This supports everything from story research to background legal checks to business searches for the advertising team who use 192.com Prove-ID to investigate areas and plan campaigns according to what businesses are based there.

Conclusion

By streamlining the company’s directory enquiries processes, Trinity Mirror has improved the efficiency of its search facilities resulting in information being obtained more quickly. Using 192.com Prove-ID meant that all the previous 118 numbers used by staff could be blocked and instead of using a multitude of services, directory enquiries needs are all supplied by the same provider. This has dramatically cut costs, stopped large phone bills and made it easier for management to monitor financial outgoings.

"Employees easily picked up how to use the service and, with the 192.com Prove-ID support desk available if necessary, are always able to find what they are looking for"
Peter Raettig, Operations Manager, MGN
